Obviously, if all you do is copy the files to somewhere else on the same PC, you haven't accomplished much. I think the assumption that the posted scripts make is that some real backup solution already exists (i.e., a tape backup system). All that you need to do to include CVS in such a backup system is to make sure the files of the repository are directly or indirectly backed up. Our backup strategy is very similar to the ones posted. Nightly, we copy the repository files to a location that, itself, is already getting backed up to tape (and the tapes are regularly moved off-site). In this way, our CVS repository is indirectly backed up without having to worry about reconfiguring the existing tape backup system to do anything special with regards to shutting down CVS, etc. -----Original Message----- From: Bruce Hill [mailto:bhill at euphonix.com] Sent: Friday, May 16, 2003 12:53 PM To: Cvsnt at Cvsnt. Org It appears that some of the backup scripts recently posted do backup to a different folder on the same drive. If so, this provides very little protection. At a minimum, your backup should go to a different physical drive. Even better is to backup to a different machine, and ideally to a different location to provide protection against fire, flood, etc. Also, for those setting up CVS repositories. If CVS seems sluggish, it could be your virus protection software. The CVS web site has warnings about CVS operations failing with McAfee or Norton virus software, but even with other virus software, if you don't disable virus checking in your repository it will slow down your CVS operations.
