D:\develop>cvs edit d:\develop\test1.txt
cvs [server aborted]: absolute pathname `d:/develop' illegal for
server

D:\develop>cvs edit test1.txt

D:\develop>cvs edit test1.txt
test1.txt       tmh     Wed May 12 11:04:23 2004 GMT    Monaco
D:\develop

D:\develop>cvs unedit test1.txt

What server version is it?  Recent cvsnt & cvshome.org servers won't
allow you to specify the absolute path in the first place, so it
doesn't get a chance to fail later on.
