Branches are for development purposes only, not to use for releases (as such). The way to work like this is to: branch, develop, test, merge to trunk, tag, release where all of your releases come from the trunk only. You can also tag a branch, if you have to maintain multiple version streams (like supporting multiple releases, for example). But you always release off of the tag.
