Thanks Tony that was my problem. So this is documented for others who are 
not familiar what is required is as follows.

In my case I am using Windows authenication which worked but this can be 
changed via the User DSN options.
>From the ODBC Data source administrator create and entry under User DSN to 
point to your server & DB

The name used for this new User DSN entry is what you place in the Name for 
Repository auditing extension.
