The new tag code will handle quite a bit of flexibility.

Just a tag, or
branch.n for any revision along a branch (branch.0 is the branchpoint)
branch:date for any date along a branch

It's coming together slowly.. not as fast as I'd like TBH but 2.5.02 is 
dependent on it...
